Happy New Year Artists

2019 will be a great year

By DUSTAN KNIGHT

I won’t have time to paint today….I am going out of town and I will not be able to do any art…

You want me to do what -for how long?’   I haven’t been able to get to the studio in weeks!

My studio is a wreck- all the pipes burst and the mice ate my brushes.

We have all been there BUT that doesn’t have to halt our artistic flow.

I was thinking this morning, as I look ahead into the New Year, that I have a visual list of about ten new painting series just waiting to be explored.

Sometimes as I fall asleep or just as I wake up I get these ideas and I try to take a few minutes to focus on them and verbalize them - internally- .

(Some folks sketch them out on a pad of paper besides their bed).

I think this part of being an artist is important.

The time outside the studio thinking about ‘making’ and ‘seeing’ insures my time in front of my easel is much more productive.

I edit my ideas - revisiting them during a quiet moment of the busy day - while driving somewhere or waiting for something - I think about what the series is trying to get at. I imagine it with a different range of colors, or discard it as weak or put the idea into the ‘list for later’

When I get into the studio and put the most exciting ideas onto a canvas, the paintings flow, since I have already really started them weeks earlier my decision making is more confident.

Sometimes it’s so easy I realize that the best part of the creative process was the time I worked on the idea outside the studio.

Wishing my favorite artists a great 2019. Let’s make fabulous ART!
